Cultural Agreement Between the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Government of the People's Republic of China

The Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Government of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the two Contracting Parties), desirous of strengthening and expanding friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, education, culture and art, public health, mass media, and sports, have agreed as follows:

Article 1

The two Contracting Parties agree to have exchanges and cooperation in the field of culture and art in the following ways:

(a) Exchange visits of writers and artists;
(b) Exchange performing tours by troupes of artists;
(c) Hold exhibitions on culture and art in each other's country;
(d) Exchange of visit studies;
(e) Encourage exchange of publications and cooperation between national museums;
(f) Exchange of information and cooperation between national libraries and archives of the two Contracting Parties.

Article 2

The two Contracting Parties agree to translate and publish outstanding works of literature and art of each other's country, and exchange books, magazines and other materials on culture and art.

Article 3

The two Contracting Parties agree to strengthen contacts and cooperation between sports organizations of the two countries. They shall send, according to needs and possibilities, athletes, coaches and sports teams to each other's country for friendly visits and competitions and for the exchange of techniques.

Article 4

The Contracting Parties shall encourage cooperation in the fields of films, television, broadcasting, the press and other mass media through appropriate competent organizations or establishments of the Contracting Parties.

Article 5

The Contracting Parties shall promote exchange of medical information and specialists in the field of public health and shall encourage cooperation between educational and research medical institutions.

Article 6

The two Contracting Parties shall encourage the development of relations in the field of education by:

(a) Cooperation between their universities and other higher institutions;
(b) Reciprocal visits of teaching staff of all levels for documentation and for delivering lectures;
(c) Granting, according to their possibilities, scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies;
(d) Exchange of experts and educational delegations for specialization and exchange of experiences, and for participation at international and national scientific conferences, seminars and symposia organized in the other Party's country.

Article 7

The Contracting Parties shall promote exchanges of educational, cultural and scientific materials. To this end, they will encourage the establishment and development of relations between the appropriate competent establishments and organizations of the two Parties.

Article 8

For the purpose of the implementation of the present Agreement the Contracting Parties shall agree to elaborate an executive program of cultural cooperation.

Article 9

The present Agreement shall enter into force on the date of signature. It shall be valid for a period of five (5) years, renewable automatically for successive periods of five (5) years unless either Party requests its termination by serving a written notice to the other Party six (6) months prior to the date of expiration.

Done in Beijing on June 23rd, 1988 in English and Chinese languages, both texts being equally authentic.
