Cultural Agreement Between the Government of the Republic of Gambia and the Government of the People's Republic of China
The Government of the Republic of the Gambia and the Government of the
People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the two Contracting
Parties), with a view to strengthening friendly relations and promoting
exchanges between the two countries in the sphere of culture, have decided to
conclude the present Agreement, the provisions of which are as follows:
Article 1
The two Contracting Parties agree, in accordance with the principles of
equality and mutual benefit, to promote exchanges and cooperation between the
two countries in the fields of culture, education, science, technology, sports,
publication, the press and broadcasting.
Article 2
The two Contracting Parties agree to promote exchanges and cooperation in the
field of culture and art in the following ways:
(a) Exchange visits of writers and artists; (b) Exchange performing tours
by troupes of artists; (c) Hold exhibitions on culture and art in each
other's country.
Article 3
The two Contracting Parties agree to undertake the following program of
exchanges and cooperation in the field of education:
(a) Exchange of visits and study and lecture tours by teachers and
scholars; (b) Grant scholarships to each other's students according to needs
and possibilities; (c) Facilitate the establishment of direct contacts and
cooperation between institutions of higher learning of the two countries; (d)
Encourage the exchange of textbooks and other educational books and materials
between the educational institutions of the two countries; (e) Encourage and
facilitate the attendance by scholars of each other's country at international
academic meetings held in the other country.
Article 4
The two Contracting Parties agree to translate and publish outstanding works
of literature and art of each other's country, and exchange books, magazines and
other materials on culture and art.
Article 5
The two Contracting Parties agree to strengthen contacts and cooperation
between sports organizations of the two countries. They shall send, according to
needs and possibilities, athletes, coaches and sports teams to each other's
country for friendly visits and competitions and for the exchange of techniques.
Article 6
The two Contracting Parties agree to undertake a program of exchanges and
cooperation in the fields of the press, broadcasting, television and the cinema.
Article 7
The two Contracting Parties agree to undertake a program of ex-changes in the
field of the social sciences including the exchange of visits and lecture tours
by social scientists and of relevant materials.
Article 8
The two Contracting Parties encourage exchanges and cooperation between
libraries and museums of the two countries.
Article 9
With a view to implementing the present Agreement, the two Contracting
Parties agree that an annual executive program and the expenses for cultural
exchanges shall be agreed on separately.
Article 10
The present Agreement shall enter into force as from the date of its
signature. It shall be valid for a period of five (5) years, renewable
automatically successive periods of five (5) years unless either Party requests
its termination by serving a written notice to the other Party six (6) months
prior to the date of expiration.
Done in duplicate in Beijing on April 15, 1987. In
English and Chinese languages, both texts being equally authentic.
