The Funeral Room
Family tradition had it that couples had to be buried together at the same
time. If the husband or wife died, the deceased wasn't to be buried until the
other party died. Before that, the coffins were placed in a special funeral
room. This rule was broken by a widow named Jiang Zhengguo in the 1930s. She
held a grand funeral for her husband, son, father-in-law, and daughter-in-law,
even though she and her mother-in-law were still alive.
On the funeral day, the procession stretched more than 5
kilometers. Hundreds of burial objects were burnt and the fire burned on for
three days. Some 6 tons of wheat and 4 tons of yellow wine were consumed.
