Suzhou, a sea of fragrant snow
The best time to observe plum blossoms is in late February and early March.
In the "sea of fragrant snow," you'll find white and red fragrant plum blossoms,
along with water, bridges and tranquility.
What do you get by observing plum blossoms? Blooming in
freezing weather, they inspire courage. As the saying goes, "the perfume of
plums comes from the painful freezing."
These days, the Festival of Plum Blossoms, held annually
in Tai lake, attracts thousands of tourists, both domestic and international.
When written in Chinese characters, "plum" and "matchmaker" have the same
pronunciation, leading many Chinese people to use plum blossoms to begin a
romance. The plum blossoms have also led to other folk customs in Tai Lake:
people come to the area to eat plum pastries, drink plum porridge, take photos
and hang ribbons with wishes for good fortune on them.
