Lake Kanas, a secluded paradise
* Wucai Tan
Located 24 kilometers north of the county seat of Burqin, Wucai Tan,
literally 'colorful riverside', covers an area of three sq kilometers and lies
to the north of the E'erqisi River that runs through Burqin. It's known for
yadan topography. Yadan, means 'Steep Mound' in Uygur, is formed by various
trias, jurassic, and cretaceous sediment. The long-time exposure to wind and
rain largely contributed to the diversified mineral content of the riverside
rocks, which consequently display a wide spectrum of hues, adding much color to
the dry area. Red dominates here, dotted with green, white, black, and other
transitional colors. Wholly disparate from the northern riverside with its
colorful, bare rocks, the other side of the river is a flourishing oasis in the
middle of a scrubby desert.
* Kanas Scenic Zone
Moving over 100 kilometers northward from Burqin, one arrives at Jiadengyu
Village, from which one can take a three-hour horse-ride to tour around the
Kanas Scenic Zone, hyped as the 'Last Pure Land in the World' due to its
seclusion and serenity. Here, lush birch woods and secluded bays at beautiful
lakes are far away from the noise of big high-tech cities.
* The nomad village of Baihaba
Baihaba is one of the Tuwa-populated areas in the mountainous region. A nomad
village about 30 kilometers south of Kanas Lake , Baihaba is known as the first village in
northwest China because it's near China's border with Kazakhstan. Staying
overnight in the local Mongolian tents provides a chance to observe the local
people's ancient way of life amidst the rustic beauty.
