A Journey To Heaven
Kekexili is in the hinterland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering the south of
Kunlun Mountains and the north of Tanggula Mountains. It is the largest
uninhabited area in China. Despite the harsh natural environment for human
beings, Kekexili is a wonderland for wild donkeys, yaks, Tibetan antelopes and
230 species of wild animals. The endangered Tibetan antelopes are the pride of
Kekexili, with only about 7,000 to 100,000 left worldwide.

Passing through Fenghuoshan Tunnel, the peak of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and
also the highest tunnel in the world, you come to the Tanggula Mountains, where
the world's highest railway station lies, at about 5,068 m above sea level.
Through thousands of years, Tanggula, one of the nearest places to heaven about
5,300 m above sea level, has always been a perilous destination. Yet now it is
quite safe to visit inside the train.

The Qiangtang Grasslands in Naqu spreads over about 600,000 square km, taking
up half of the whole of Tibet, averaging 4,500 m above sea level. The boundless
grassland is the principal pastoral area in Tibet, scattered with white sheep
and black yaks.
Getting off the train and spending some time inside the colorful tents with
Tibetans is definitely a way to relax on the journey. Take a deep breath and
enjoy the Qingke wine and yoghurt!
The biggest attraction is the horse racing festival in Naqu, normally held
during late July or early August on the Tibetan calendar (August in solar
calendar), lasting five to 15 days.
