Panda Habitat in Sichuan
Wei Jiatan, Construction Ministry's Planning
Inspector in Chengdu ,
Sichuan, pointed out that the UNESCO Convention on Safeguarding World Cultural
and Natural Heritage should be strictly abided by and relationships between
conservation and exploration, scenic resorts and local communities, and
administration and business operation should be properly handled. The panda's
habitat should enjoy harmonious coexistence between men and nature and
development projects for pure economic benefits will not be allowed.
During the application stage, experts conducted surveys
and study tours to develop strategies for eco-tourism in the panda's habitat and
a consensus has been reached to plan a traveling route centered on the panda
breeding and research base in Chengdu and linking four nature reserves within
the habitat, including Baishui River in Pengzhou, Anzi River in Chongzhou,
Hongkou in Dujiangyan
and Heshui River in Dayi.
The panda breeding and research base in Chengdu enjoys high reputation
worldwide and the other four nature reserves are near Chengdu, with the farthest
one 100 kilometers away from the city. Thus, this traveling route can meet needs
of tourists to visit the birthplace of the panda and reduce their traveling
costs.
