Laigu Village: Beauty Beyond Belief
Lakes at the end of glaciers add much to the beauty of the glaciers
themselves. Yet not every glacier has a lake. Only in areas of rich
precipitation, where the melt water from glaciers is blocked by moraines, can
lakes be formed.
As a glacier flows downhill, rocks tend to accumulate along the sides. Most
of this accumulation is a result of rocks from the sides of the valley falling
onto the edge of the glacier. Eventually, these rocks form what is called a
"lateral moraine". When two glaciers merge, a collision of moraines can be seen
running down the center of the glacier. This type of moraine is called "medial
moraine."
The charm of the Laigu glacier lies in its black-and-white medial moraines.
Rivers formed by melt water from the glaciers wind in beautiful curves before
finally flowing into the two lakes. What are more exciting are the icebergs
floating in the lakes, with their mysterious, blue tranquility.
