Laochengxiang - Tianjin's Living Fossil
Although the old area has been transformed into a commercial center with fully
equipped office buildings and top grade plazas; a wealth of cultural relics and
historic sites, such as the Palace of Tianhou (Goddess of the Sea), the
Confucian Temple,
the Drum
Tower, and the Guangdong Guildhall, have been well preserved. The Guangdong
Guildhall, built in 1907 and converted into the Tianjin Theatrical Museum in
1986, was one of the two preeminent opera houses in China, along with that in Suzhou
, in the eastern province of Jiangsu. The quadrangle courtyard now houses
displays and exhibitions relating to the history of stage performances.

Quadrangle Courtyards in
Longchengxiang | Tianjin's
architecture is particularly unique. Because of its long exposure to western
culture from the mid-19th century, the city is considered a museum of
international architecture, with styles ranging from Roman to Russian, Baroque,
and Greek. There are also buildings with a rich mixture of Chinese and western
styles.
