On the Trail of the Unique Dong Culture

The Dong building
Traveling in the Dong ethnic villages of southeast Guizhou
Province, you're sure to be entranced by the pagoda-like drum
towers . Rows of diaojiao lou or suspended riverside houses, ingenious
wind-and-rain bridges, and the sweet and touching dage, a unique musical chorus
are some of the highlights of this ideal tourist destination.
Chejiang Dong Village
Southeast from Kaili, is Rongjiang County, with more than 20 Dong houses
stretching 15km along the riverbank, projecting over the river and shadowed by
thousands of thick old banyan trees. Their wooden houses have sloping roofs
forming beautiful geometric designs.
Rongjiang County
Only one kilometer from the main town of Rongjiang is Chejiang village. Known
as the "Thousand-House Dong Village", this is the largest Dong village with the
most enchanting scenery. Like all Dong villages, it has a unique wooden gate at
the village entrance where locals welcome and see off visitors and guests.
Singing girls present visitors with bowls of wine before they pass through the
gate. Visitors who cannot sing, or who fail to respond, have to drink more wine.
It's only after drinking that visitors are qualified to become good friends with
the Dong people.
