A treasure hunt awaits at Panjiayuan market
The biggest difficulty in the development of Panjiayuan
was that it there was nothing similar for developers to refer to. However, the
public has showed a lot of interest in the market from the very beginning,
proving there is a strong need for such a market. At the same time, Panjiayuan
has also played an important role in promoting the protection of historical and
social relics.
Four things make Panjiayuan different from other secondhand markets.
First, there are a lot ancient antiques and curios,
boasting high collector values. Visitors have an opportunity to pan for gold in
the vast river of low priced antiques.
Second is the system of small stalls, favored by people wanting to randomly
scan the huge market, in search of rare and cheap treasures. Panjiayuan isn't
listed among the top ten antique markets in China because of its stall system.
But this grassroots feature could also be the reason why the market attracts so
many visitors.
Third, the market opens on holidays. Most working people don't have time to
go to the market during the weekdays, and want to relax there on weekends. They
come away with nothing after wandering the market for a whole day, but the
experience can still be psychologically and spiritually fulfilling.
Fourth, Panjiayuan is an integrated market, incorporating cultural antiques,
various artworks, and ornaments, as well collectables from across the country.
The market caters to different customers' needs and you can see a lot of folk
customs in the market as well as merely shopping.
The market's opening time also leads to the usual traffic jams in the
surrounding area, especially on weekends. This problem is yet to be resolved,
but the government is planning a more efficient traffic system for the area.
Panjiayuan is composed of several sub-markets. There is
a cultural commercial zone, compromising Beijing Antique Town and Beijing
Painting and Artworks World, as well as Panjiayuan Secondhand Market. Beijing
Antique Town is made up of official shops, while Beijing Painting and Artworks
World is more upscale. These two places cater to wealthier customers, while
Panjiayuan Secondhand Market has something for everyone.
The success of Panjiayuan reflects the development of China's economy, and
the market can also exert apositive influence on the protection of antiques.
Although it's true that there are a lot of fake products in the market, these
are often very well made by skilled craftsman. And while they may not be the
real deal, they are affordable and will probably fool your visitors!
