Qian Ling Tomb-China's First Mausoleum

Each layer of stone blocks is fastened together with iron bolts. All the crevices between the layers are filled with molten lead. It would not have been an easy task to open the tomb with the technology available at the time. Research has verified there are no holes around the tomb, and the stone blocks and earth that line the tomb passage remain the same as when Wu Zetian and Gao Zong were buried. Because of this, experts believe the tomb has been left untouched.

In 1960,the doorway to Wu Zetain's grave was accidentally blasted away by farmers attempting to clear some land. They found in seconds what robbers had been looking for 1,000 years. Although the Chinese government has held the keys to the gravesite for over 40 years, Qian Ling still awaits excavation.
