Shanghai-East Meets West

With a history stretching back as far as 6,000 years, it wasn't until Shanghai
was opened to foreign trade that it gained the momentum that marks it as the
world-class city it is today.
The subsequent era saw foreigners flock to Shanghai for its endless
opportunities. As a result, Shanghai has undergone some extreme changes over the
past 160 years, from a fishing village on a mudflat into a great metropolis
featuring a unique mix of East and West.
As one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, Shanghai is a spectacle
of cultural hybrids most easily seen in places like the west side of the Bund on
the Huangpu
River , the residential area in Shikumen (the Stone Gate), and the new
entertainment center Xin Tian Di.
