Introduction to Bird Island

More than 100,000 birds of 20 plus different kinds have a paradise on a very small island located on the northwest corner of Qinghai Lake, near Buhua Lake and about 300 kilometers (km) from Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, in China's remote west. The singing of many kinds of birds can be heard from very far away. Walking nearer it, one can find a huge bird family of different kinds living harmoniously on a pinnacle island.

Birds in the Qinghai Lake region mainly rest and reproduce on Bird Island, Haixin Hill, Gucha Hill, Haixi Hill, Sand Island and the surrounding swamp area. As the name suggests, the Bird Island is the most famous as well as the most alluring tourist attraction and gathers the most number of birds.

Thousands of wild geese, gulls, cormorants, sandpipers, extremely rare black-necked cranes and many other birds live there. Local saying goes that if the Qinghai Lake is a crown on the head of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, then the Bird Island is the largest pearl on it.

This island is, in fact, a large rocky peninsular that juts from the lake. After 1978, water on the north, west and south sides of the island receded, and bottom of the lake linked with the bank. Thus, the Bird Island has actually become a peninsular, but the name has been kept out of habit.
