Travertine Landscapes
Travertine, which is similar to limestone, is a form of
calcium carbonate that comes from river or spring deposits, often beautifully
colored and banded due to the presence of iron compounds or other properties and
is famous for its tourism value and special ecological environment. Travertine
landscape is a unique and rare geological feature that largely appears in
Southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. The most famous and spectacular
travertine landscape is situated at the Huanglong
Scenic Spot, which is renowned for its large scale and huge variety. The Zhaga
Waterfall at Muniqou Scenic Spot and Baishui Terrace Travertine Pond in Yunnan
are also well-known places where travertine landscapes can be found.
Huanglong Travertine
Huanglong (Yellow Dragon)
scenic spot, located in Songpan County, Sichuan
Province, and listed as a world natural heritage, is celebrated for its
majestic and spectacular travertine landscapes. In the Huanglong Valley there
are long stretches of travertine terrain and more than 3,400 travertine colored
ponds. With all of its travertine colored ponds, beachlands, lakes, terraces, springs
, waterfalls and caves, Huanglong is arguably one of the world's best natural
travertine museums.
** Types of Travertine landscape
Travertine landscapes in Huanglong are mainly distributed within the
Huanglong Valley, Based on the characteristics of their landforms, these
travertines fall into four types:
1. Travertine beachlands: A kind of liquid travertine formed
by karst fissure water flowing along a slope in sheets. Beginning at Huanglong
Temple
and running through the Golden Sand on Earth and Bathing Cave Waterfall, the
main part of the Huanglong travertine beachlands is 2,500 meters long and 30-170
meters wide -- the longest and most majestic of its kind in the world.
