What's Old Beijing Left Behind?
When it comes to Old Beijing , what jumps into your mind?
Roast duck with crispy skin; erguotou, a grain-distilled white spirit with a
low price and pure taste; sexy but elegant cheongsamˇˇ
Well, all of these are typical of old Beijing. Yet, they are merely a tiny
part of time-honored Beijing traditions, and the list still goes on and on.
A city with all the trappings of a modern metropolis, Beijing used to be home
to numerous time-honored shops which flavored the city with an ancient charm
that never fails to surprise. However, in recent years the number has greatly
shrunk in the face of accelerated modernization. In 2002, there were more than
300 old-time shops, while the number had deceased sharply to about 160 by the
end of 2006. Accordingly, many traditional handicrafts are dying away. In the
hopes of protecting the handicrafts that are fortunately extant within the
remaining old-time shops, the government had listed 31 of them as the intangible
cultural heritage at the municipal level by the end of this June. The following
are selected from the list.
