Liang Zhu, the Oriental Romeo and Juliet
The Story of
Liang Zhu

The fairy tale of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is as well known in China as
Romeo and Juliet is in the west. It is also a story of tragic love and has been
handed down over many generations. The story of Liang-Zhu, as it is known, is
still considered by Chinese people to be the best illustration of true love.
Nowadays, among various versions of this classic story, the most popular form
may be the violin concerto "Liang-Zhu." This was composed by He Zhanhao and Chen
Gang in the 1950s. It is also deemed to be one of the most successful music
accomplishments in Chinese modern history.
