Childhood Memory
June 1 was Children's Day. On the way to office that morning, I saw groups of
schoolchildren with smiles shining, marching in neat lines somewhere to stage
performances in celebration of the festival.
It made me nostalgic, thinking back to my own childhood. Born in the late
1970s, a time far less wealthy than today's China, I fondly remember xiaorenshu
(a kind of palm-sized comic book) and the simple, classic Chinese toys and games
that have been around for generations.
Xiaorenshu
When I was little, xiaorenshu, or comic books usually no bigger
than the palm of an adult's hand and made of pictures with brief captions, were
among the few reading materials I had access to. Most xiaorenshu were adapted
from Chinese mythological fictions and Chinese classic novels like "The Dream of
Red Mansion," "The Journey to the West," or stories of Chinese wartime heroes of
the early 20th century.
