Yushengtang, a treasure of Chinese herbal medicine
Yushengtang is a drugstore with a history of nearly 400 years, and is also as
a Chinese herbal medicine shop and an antique collection firm. It is famous
throughout northern regions of China such as Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shandong and
Shananxi. It was originally "The Bai's herbal medicine shop," and was then
renamed "Yushengtang" by Emperor Qianlong to commemorate the medical skills and
medical ethics of Bai Linyun who was of the seventh generation of the Bai clan.
During its prosperity, Yushengtang had many branches across China, but as the
warlords engaged in tangled warfare, it began to decline.
In 1999, the descendants of the Bai clan founded the Beijing Yushengtang
Herbal Medicine Museum, which provided a place to exhibit the medical
instruments, medical books and medical samples of Yushengtang
Beijing Yushengtang Herbal Medicine
Museum
The museum houses more than 3,000 pieces in its collection, among which are a
statue of Shennong (a legendary ruler of ancient China who introduced
agriculture and herbal medicine) in the Ming Dynasty, mottled color camouflages
on rusty iron hooks, a statue of the medical king on an old-style
medicine-chest, and wooden medicine boxes on counters.
