Gifted Dancers from the Mountains
The Lisu are a minority group in southwest of
China. According to archaeological research, Lisu people descended from the
ancient Qiang People and shared the same ancestor as the Yi minority group. The
Lisu population numbers around 578,000 and most live in Yunnan province. They
reside in the river valley, along the hillside, and above the mesa, which is
mainly along the drainage areas of the Jinsha River, Lancang River, and Nujiang
River.
Lisu people live in villages formed by 10 individual families. Each village
represents a unique small society. The Lisu are a monogamous, agrarian
society.
Traditional Lisu clothing isunique and pretty. Usually, man wears a short
collarless jacket, covered with a loose flax coat, with a knife hanging on the
left side and a package of arrows on the right. Women wear embroidered coats and
flax dresses. White beads, corals and shells are their favorite decorations.
Lisu people believe in spirits and think that everything has its own spirit.
They also practice ancestor worship.
Lisu people live in cabins built above stone foundations and featuring two
floors. All the constructions, including the roof and the fence in the yard, are
made of wood. People live in the second floor, and the first floor is set aside
for cattle and pigs.
