Gaochun County of Nanjing is famous for its well-preserved ancient street shaped about 500 years ago. The street stretches for over 800 meters long from east to west. It's lined with old but elegant stores, bringing visitors back to the days hundreds of years ago.

The street's history

Thanks to the developed waterways around the street, local economy has seen great progress. Businessmen from the neighboring Anhui Province brought with them bamboo, timber and mountain farm products to trade with the local residents in Gaochun. As time went on, a commercial street gradually took shape.

Attracted by this booming trade street, more and more businessmen came, and the ancient street of Gaochun became a large-scale trade centre during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). A taxation and administration bureau was founded during that time. The street was paved with rouge stones in the center and blue stones at the sides. This coloration still remains to this day.
