Chengdu People's happy life
In China's southwest basin, there lies one of the most leisurely and carefree
cities -- Chengdu. The theme of Chengdu people's life is no other than having
fun: playing mahjong, enjoying the spicy hot malatang, speculating in stocks,
and gazing at beautiful ladies.
Mahjong zest

While not the first to play mahjong, Chengdu people are indisputably the most
addicted. Mahjong is nicknamed "table shadowboxing," as it is seen as a sort of
physical and brain exercise.
It was reported recently that a 71-year-old
man from Chengdu had invented a kind of dual-function mahjong, in which players
could learn English while killing time. That is typical Chengdu innovation.

Spicy malatang savor

Malatang or chuanchuanxiang is a kind of spicy hot snack in China, somewhat
like hot pot. Sliced raw meats, edible offals (entrails and internal organs),
and vegetables are impaled on bamboo skewers, and dipped into a pan of boiling
spicy soup mounted above a heating device.
Malatang was born in Chengdu in the mid-1980s. At that time, malatang
operators only needed a small honeycomb briquette stove, an aluminum boiler
filled with homemade bittern (a kind of liquid left after the distilling of salf
from seawater), a small table, and a tray filled with food materials and
condiments.
