Ancient city blocks of Xi'an
Street of the Hui People
Another famous ancient block is a region where Hui people live. A
dozen mosques of various shapes built in different times in history are located
in the region, where about 20,000 Hui people still practice their traditional
religion and way of life. The place is known for its multi-dimensional cultural
atmosphere with unique historic and cultural values.
Most visitors to the city won't miss the Street of the Hui People, not only
because of its cultural attractions, but also because of the famous delicacies
on the two sides of the street.
Protection and Development
To protect the style and feature of ancient blocks of Xi'an, the city
government began to revamp some of the streets in the ancient blocks in 1991.
An agreement between Norway and China was signed in 1997 to better protect
the Street of the Hui People. As a result, No. 125 of Huajue Alley won an award
for cultural protection by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and
Cultural Organization). With effective protective measures, the Street of the
Hui People is currently the best-preserved ancient block in the city, which
incarnates the Muslim and Yellow Loess cultural flavors.
Shuyuanmen is the first cultural street modeled after
the antique style in Xi'an. The municipal government invested 4.3 million yuan
(US$532,679) to make the street much better looking. The place is now also a
must-go for tourists visiting Xi'an.
