Ancient city blocks of Xi'an

The ancient blocks of a city are like the annual rings of a tree, recording the city's history; those of Xi'an are no exception. Only proper and effective protection and exploration could maintain the historical traditions and cultural characteristics of Xi'an. However, in Xian, as in any city, it has always been a hard task to balance between construction and the protection of ancient history and culture. Unfortunately, from time to time, bulldozers win out over the old houses.

Xi'an, one of the most ancient cities in China, boasts some of the best-known ancient blocks in the country that are well protected and developed, deliberately combining historic and modern civilizations.

After hundreds or even thousands of years, these ancient blocks are still blooming with great vitality and vigor.

   Shuyuanmen

Shuyuanmen is a well-known ancient block in Xi'an. Starting from South Gate, Shuyuanmen Street is 570 meters long, and ends at Wenchang Gate. Near the street are famous sites like the Xiangzi Temple, the Baoqing Temple Pagoda, and the Forest of Steles as well as the Wolong Temple, and on the street is the Guanzhong Academy of Ancient Studies. On the two ends of the street stand two grand archways, and along the street there are about 100 various shops of cultural products, antiques, four treasures of the study (writing brush, ink stick, ink slab, and paper), bronze ware, folk artworks, traditional handicrafts, and some jewelries.
