The "eight immortals " in Chinese folk tales might also be seen on gate blocks, such as the Han Zhongli's magic fan, Zhang Guolao's drum, Cao Guojiu's clappers, Tie Guaili's gourd, Hang Xiangzi's flute, He Xiangu's lotus and Lan Caihe's flower basket. The pattern with all the eight things on it signals the eight immortals offering birthday congratulations.
