Chaozhou-Shantou's Residential Buildings

Hailed as an exotic flower of Chinese architecture, the residential buildings in the Chaozhou-Shantou region have won the praises of many experts. Although time has passed, and history has changed, a great many precious residential building have retained their charm. Among them, the most attractive one is the former residence of Chen Cihong, which has been hailed as "The First Residential Building in Lingnan" and which took scores of years for his clan family to complete.

The residence, including four parts, covers an area of 16,530 square meters, and has 506 rooms of various sizes. While retaining the local architectural style, the building also boasts the magnificence and elegance of the royal palaces and has been regarded as a miniature of the royal palace in the region.

Rather in terms of architectural layout, scale or interior and exterior decorations, the residential buildings of the Chaozhou-Shantou region bear great similarities to the royal palaces. Therefore, "there were the royal palaces in Beijing, and residential houses in Chaozhou" is by no means an overstatement, but rather a most appropriate statement.
