Bells in modern China
While the bells were used in ancient China for various
practical purposes, such as for musical effect, religious activities, and
sounding night watches, bells in modern China has in fact become a symbol of an
idea, a spirit and a culture. A case for example is the "Admonish-the -world
Bell", which always admonishes people to pay attention to historical lessons and
experiences.
On September 27, 1925, the funeral committee of Dr. Sun
Yat-sen unanimously decided to adopt the bell alarm design for the Dr. Sun
Yat-sen' Mausoleum in Nanjing
. According to Lu Yanzhi, the designer, the shape of an alarm bell
implied the need to "arouse the masses of the people", conforming to Dr. Sun
Yat-sen' s mettle and spirit.
The historical mission of "arousing the masses of the
people" has been carried on in modern times and the bell culture developed
further. In 1990 when the 11th Asian Games opened in Beijing
, an impressive bell-and-drum beating
ceremony was held to enhance the spirit of striving to make the Chinese nation
stronger and stronger and promoting virtue by material means, a move highly
praised by public opinion in China and abroad.
In 1997 when Hong
Kong returned to the motherland, a new "Admonish-the-World Bell" was built
by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics and the Big Bell Temple
Museum to mark the historical event.
Measuring 1.97 meters in height, 1.14 meters in rim diameter and 1,000
kilograms in weight, the bell follows the traditional solemn and elegant style
of ancient bells in China. The bell's front was engraved with the emblem of the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the body was engraved with more
than 400 characters, which forms the "Inscription to Admonish the World". The
inscription vividly relates the history of imperialist aggression against China
and the heroic struggle waged by the Chinese people to resume the sovereignty
over Hong Kong and incisively expounds the great concept of "one country, two
systems" of Deng Xiaoping, which led to the final reunification with Hong Kong.
Chinese culture, long and rich, becomes even more valued and renowned because
of the precious bell culture, which not only enables the modern people to
appreciate the beauty of art and science, but also gives them the inspiration
and enlightenment to create culture. At the core of Chinese people's bell
complex is worship; worship of beauty, power, ethics, kind- heartedness and
justice. Undoubtedly, the complex will be cherished, carried on and developed by
the future generations of Chinese people.
