Tibetan Costume: Carrier of Culture
On the road to modern fashion show
With the improvements in transportation between Tibet and
the hinterland, exchanges of various articles, including clothing, have
flourished. Today, traditional Tibetan clothing is disappearing and being
replaced by modern Western-style suits, jeans and other contemporary garments.
Middle-aged women, who are less bold than younger people, may also wear a
Western-style suit jacket over their Tibetan dress, along with a traditional hat
decorated with gold and silver satin. Today, this has become a very popular way
of dressing in Tibet, which demonstrates Tibetan tolerance of the outside world.
Personal ornaments worn by girls in the hinterland, such as silver bracelets
with turquoise inlets and silver necklaces inlaid with agate and other local
jewels, also reflect the Tibetan influence.
Many modern fashion designers derive their inspiration from traditional
Tibetan clothing, like Chinese women's fashion designer Wu Haiyan, for example,
who fashioned an entire line on the Tibetan model. In July 2000, the
first Chinese Ethnic Garment and Accessory Exposition, sponsored by the State
Ethnic Affairs Commission, was held in Kunming,
capital of Southwest China's Yunnan
Province , where traditional Tibetan clothing was highly praised and admired
by all audience members.
Among the displays, the most valuable was a series of four Tibetan suits
selected and sent by the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Deqen, Yunnan
Province. The Tibetan robes were lavishly embellished with gold, silver, pearl
and agate ornaments. From these finely made and exquisitely decorated garments,
one can trace the entire history of the development of Tibetan clothing.
As the carrier of Tibetan culture, Tibetan clothing has not only aroused
curiosity but has also gained respect from people around the
world.
