Chinese Rural Architecture and Decoration

Most homes contained two rows of windows: The bottom row had plain windows that could not be opened and the top windows were hinged on a rotating central pivot. The upper row had either regular or irregular lattice patterns, such as the irregular "cracked ice" design. For good fortune the Chinese decorated their windows with special designs and auspicious and religious emblems. The windows in northern houses had exposed frames and deep, red-painted woodwork, lined with transparent paper (before glass panes were used). Deep red, white and the gray were the characteristic colors used for houses in that particular region.

The courtyard of a typical rural house

For the Chinese, a safe and healthy home is essential to their everyday lives. Chinese architecture is known for the specific patterns, materials and meanings used in the construction process. Since no one wants to live in an ill-fated home, much time, energy and thought is devoted to one's safety. Locale is just as important as construction materials when building a house in China.
