Festival-Related Wine Customs of Ethnic Minorities

In the afternoon, all households of the host village prepare delicious foods for the banquet. During the meal, the juniors pour wine for the seniors, and the seniors raise their wine glasses first. While drinking the homemade "Menguo Wine", the elderly begin to sing time-honored Hani folk songs. Young men propose a toast to the old men, and when their glasses are drained everyone cheers.

The Mongolian people have a custom of "getting drunk to the full and lifting their voice and singing aloud" during the lunar New Year. On the morning of the first day of the first month according to the lunar calendar, female and male herdsmen ride horses in threes and fours. When the host comes out to greet them, they say "Hello!" to one another holding towels in their hands. The host first offers brick tea and then good wine. Everyone is then seated in the white yurts to eat mutton and soft milky lumps, while drinking wine and singing lucky songs.

Since the Miao people rely on the vast mountains and forests for survival, their festivals forge an indissoluble bond with these elements. The Miao also love wine, which plays a very important role in their social lives. Most Miao families brew low-proof wine and usually drink one bowl of wine after work to relieve fatigue. They also invite good friends to enjoy wine together as they take in the beautiful scenery around them and sing and dance joyously.
