Doors and Windows to the Soul
Dialectic Philosophy
Traditional Chinese doors and windows also reflect the
ideology of philosophy. In ancient China, the philosophy of dialectics was
employed in the art of traditional Chinese doors and windows, such as the
contrast between emptiness and solidity, and brightness and darkness, attaching
a rich philosophical meaning. The doors and windows were usually formed into
certain artistic images by combining the environment, space and color. As to
design, lines of different length and shape were used to demonstrate variety.
Feminine Touch
In ancient China, men were the center of power while women suffered
confinement. This is also embodied in traditional Chinese doors and windows. In
some "big families" (also known as "the Family of Etiquette and Poetry"), many
engraved doors and windows were installed to guard women and keep them in their
place. In an ordinary family, there were relatively fewer doors and windows.
As the embodiment of Chinese culture, traditional
Chinese doors and windows are the soul of Chinese art. With social and economic
development, however, most modern buildings no longer adopt traditional doors
and windows, but certain rules, like fengshui , are still taken into
consideration by Chinese people. Evidence of this can be found in some
large-scale restaurants and hotels.
