Amazing Murals in Yongle Palace
Mural paintings of Yongle Palace are known for their splendid
colors. Mural paintings in Sanqing Hall feature magnificent green as its keynote
color and smatterings of red, purple and dark brown as supplements, thus
highlighting major subjects. It makes the scene look more lively and dynamic
when adding small pieces of bright colors such as white, yellow, red and gold to
the large pieces of green. More incredibly, mural painters draw an ink line
between two color patches whenever they appear together. The color patches on
each side of the line look so well-coordinated, perfect and dimensional that you
cannot believe it is true. Mural paintings in Chunyang Hall, however, highlight
contours drawn with ink lines and enriched by gold, red and green colors,
appearing bright, splendid and harmonious. Those mural paintings now still look
vivid, clear and bright after more than 700 years of erosion, largely thanks to
pigments applied to them which were all natural materials and grinded by
stone.
