Art Of Root
The root scultutor Chen Xi
"I have always been looking for ways to create unique art. Woodcarving is a
family business. We have been making decorated wood window frames for
generations. But I always wanted to be more creative." Chen Xi explains, "After
I saw a table made from a old tree root, I fell in love with the idea of root
carving. Using dead tree roots, each piece is unique. I can incorporate the
original shape and texture of the tree roots into the sculpture. The pine tree
root also gives the sculpture a natural wax-like finish, along with the nice
fresh smell."
Each piece of Chen is truly unique. He combines the element of the natural
material with his sculpture seamlessly. Chen only uses dead tree roots and
branches for his sculptures and also educates the visitors to his workshop about
protecting the forest and environment.

Wood Statue Root Carving, 'Laughing Buddha'
This is the hand carved statue of the laughing Buddha; the artist carefully
carries out the design by the position of the growth rings of the wood. The
rings contribute the skin texture of the statue. The Buddha has elongate ear
lobes and his signature big smile. The artist uses the natural form of the wood
as the body of the statue. Read more...
The laughing Buddha also known as the "Mi Le Fo" in Chinese. He is often
portrayed carrying a cloth bag. His largely exposed belly stomach is symbolic of
happiness, good luck, and plenitude. If you rub his belly, it will bring you
wealth, luck, and prosperity according to folklores.
