Four Wonders of Huizhou Carving
¡¤To build a harmonious cultural
space
Most of the Huizhou residences are near the mountain and by the river.
Huizhou residents look at buildings and the environment as a whole. So whether
they choose to implement the surrounding environment around or artificial
articles, they will coordinate them with buildings and carving decorations to
form a harmonious cultural space.
There are small yards or gardens before or behind the residences dotted with
flower beds, ponds, pot gardening, stone tables and stools, planted with trees
and flowers. The walls are decorated with brick carvings and stone carving
windows. The buildings, landscapes and plants merge to a whole harmoniously,
which reflects organic functions of architecture.
The artistic value of Huizhou woodcarving lies in not only its role of
decoration, but also the fact that it can exist as an unattached artwork.
Huizhou Brick Carving
The pattern of Huizhou brick carving comes from Han engraved brick. Its
pattern is bold and simple at the beginning, and gradually it becomes fine and
delicate and at last the pattern has formed its own style. The subjects of brick
carving are rich, including figures, animals, flowers and so on. Among these
subjects, figures take a big part, and carvers are used to spending more time
and energy on them. These figures are usually based on myths, Chinese operas,
and folk tales. For animal motifs, the lion is the favorite model of the
carvers. "Bogu" pictures are another important subject of brick carving.
The artistic style of brick carving in the Ming dynasty is simple. The
perfection of the total effect is the carvers' pursuit. In the Qing dynasty, the
artistic style became exquisite and elaborate.
The brick carvings have existed for more than 1,000 years. It was created to
satisfy people's living needs and decorating tastes. The use of brick carvings
is also becoming more widespread.
