Five Types of Screen Walls
Screen walls made of glazed tiles are normally seen
at the imperial courtyards or temples. Nine dragon walls at the Forbidden City
and Beihai Park are the best representatives.
Screen walls with brick carvings are the most common ones that can be found
in folk architectures.
Stone screen walls are carved completely out of stone, which are rare to see.
Wooden screen walls were once popular in the history, but few are left
because they cannot endure the weather.
There are another type of screen walls built with tiles or earth, and
decorated with brick carvings.
