A Treasure Trove: The Mogao Grottoes
Researchers say that there are four sources where the painters could have
come from. First are folk painters from western regions. Second are private
painters that were taken to Dunhuang by high-ranking officials from China's
central governments. Third are proficient painters from the Central Plains who
were invited to Dunhuang to paint for high prices. Fourth are the painters who
graduated from the government-sponsored painting academy in Dunhuang during the
Five Dynasties (907-960).
All the Dunhuang frescoe artists did not enjoy high social status, and this
was clearly reflected in their works, which featured a number of working scenes,
vividly reflecting the economic and technological conditions at the time. Real
secular life was integrated into the Buddhist world.
The Dunhuang painters have created splendid mural paintings, but the records
about them are almost non-existent. . It is possible that we will never know who
made these impressive works, but these nameless artists have left their mark on
Chinese art history.
