** Excavation of the Ancient Musical Instrument: Jian
Drum
Tomb M27 takes the shape of "ÖĞ," which contains marvelous masterpieces,
including bronze weapons like tomahawks or daggers, strings of ornaments that
are made from agate, pearls, and shells, and other lacquered wood articles. What
is more, the oldest "Jiangu Drum" has been uncovered along with other musical
instruments like the "Bianzhong Bell" and "Shiqing Stone."
** Gold Sheath Funeral Object
Tomb M27 is also noted for the buried person's decorative gold wears, ranging
from a sheath to a sophisticated carved loop. The graceful gold items,
especially the exceptional sheath, are brilliantly polished and well preserved.
Meanwhile, they serve as treasured materials for the study of gold articles made
in the Zhou Dynasty.
The newly excavation of the cultural relics of the Western and Eastern Zhou
dynasties represents the greatest contribution to archeological finds in China
this year. The well-preserved ancient tomb complex with such a large scale is a
rarity in the history of archaeological excavations.
The massive burial articles constitute an integral part of the valuable
literature for the study of the history of the Zhou dynasties and the study of
the ancient cultural of both the Zhou and Shang (16th-11th century BC)
dynasties. With the extension of the excavation, more information related to
ancient culture and customs are expected to be unveiled. The find is surely a
landmark in the history of archaeological research.
