The second generation of Chinese directors

He went to Hong Kong in 1937 and directed some other films. Later he also made a five-scene stage opera Free Port. In 1946 he went back to Shanghai to participate in the establishment of the Shanghai Kunlun Film Company.

Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949), Cai took part in the creations of 27 films, 10 of which were directed by him. Three of the four films with best box offices before 1949 were his works.

Cai Chusheng is one of the foremost advocates of cinematic social realism. His films are characterized by their stylistic innovations and politicized aesthetics. His political activism and filmmaking activities, first in Shanghai and then in Hong Kong, provide a context for understanding the continuum (continuous structure) in Chinese films.
