Filming the Margin of Society
"No, I don't think so. As a matter of fact, you never know
what Westerners will like," he answered quickly, "I made the movie because the
story moves me and touches my heart. From my point of view, Chengdu is a unique
city with a marvelous cultural background - a charming mixture of tradition and
fashion. Strolling around the city, you will see numerous modern bars,
restaurants, shopping malls and skyscrapers. Meanwhile you can still find
various vendors, slums, shabby teahouses and China's unique traditional
treatments such as ear cleaning, chair massage
and foot washing. They co-exist in such harmony, constituting a magnificent
landscape of Chengdu. I really enjoy the unique atmosphere here - absolutely
relaxing, rather peaceful and a bit lazy... Indeed, it is worthy of enjoying;
unlike Beijing,
where I was constantly under pressure. In Chengdu, I feel very cozy, and as a
laid-back person, and it offers me great space for creativity. However,
filmmaking is the lifetime career I chose for myself, so I will continue to
focus on both the subtle and bold themes reflecting our culture in the margin."
