Chinese Mysterious Uncle Vanya

With the old name Zhao Mo, Jin Shan (1911-1982) played the role of Vanya in the Chinese modern drama Uncle Vanya. A native of Yuanlin County in Hunan Province, Jin Shan led a half-vagrant life in his youth. In 1932 he joined the Left-Wing Dramatist League and Chinese Communist Party. Having devoted himself to stage art, in his lifetime he directed over 40 modern dramas, played over 70 parts in different dramas such as The Inspector General, Professor Mamen, Qu Yuan and Paul Kechajin.

Jin Shan was praised for his excellent performance in the drama Uncle Vanya. With simple but forceful action, he was expert in revealing the inner world of various characters.

Here is a story about him. The day when the China Youth Art Theatre was established, Liao Chengzhi, president of the theatre, declared, Jin Shan, the vice-president I introduced to you, was actually an outstanding intelligence agent of the Communist Party. It was not until this moment that people began to realize the truth: the mysterious dramatist was in fact a communist having hidden for 17 years.
