Beijing People's Art Theatre and Tianjin People's Art Theatre joined hands to
restage four of Cao's plays in Beijing. The four classic plays of
the great Chinese writer Cao Yu kicked off the commemorative activities
memorizing the 10th anniversary of Cao's death. They will be
performed at the Capital Theatre and the adjacent Small Theatre of
Beijing People's Art Theatre from November 29 to December 13, 2006.
Beijing People's Art Theatre will stage "Peking Man" (directed by Li Liuyi) from December 1
to 5 and "Thunderstorm" (directed by Xia Chun) from December
9 to 13. Tianjin People's Art Theatre will stage "Sunrise" (directed by Ren Ming) from November 29
to December 3 and "The Wilderness" (directed by Wang Yansong) from
December 6 to 10.
The two troupes have joined hands not only because of Cao's
achievements in drama, but also because Cao was from Tianjin and
used to be president of Beijing People's Art Theatre.
In the new version of "Sunrise" by Tianjin People's Art Theatre,
director Ren asked the actors to speak in Tianjin dialect for part
of the performance.
During the commemoration, Beijing People's Art Theatre will also
hold an exhibition about Cao in the lobby of Capital Theatre.
