Shanghai Farce Troupe
The Shanghai
Farce Troupe has witnessed many ups and downs over time.
In the 1960s, a lot of excellent farces were produced under the instruction
of Huang Zuolin, who was an important opera figure fond of comedy dramas. With
Huang's guidance, outstanding performances of many top comedians greatly helped
in making their comedy dramas well accepted nationwide and even earned a good
reputation among some of the then top leaders in China.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), however, performing arts were
marginalized. The Shanghai Farce Troupe failed to survive the disruptive turmoil
and consequently was disbanded.
Later, riding the wave of the reform and opening-up policy, the Shanghai
Farce Troupe was reestablished in 1978 and began to retake its former dominant
position in the comedy drama community.
Boasting a team of talented and skilled performers and directors, the troupe
has staged a large number of marvelous comedy dramas, some of which have been
awarded by the local government and even the Central Government.
At the turn of the new century, the Shanghai Farce Troupe fell under the
Shanghai Media Group and saw great developments thanks to the combined media of
stage and television.
