Directed by the renowned avant-garde artist Meng
Jinghui, the musical "Amber" has been a major blockbuster in China's drama
circle so far this year with Liu Ye, a laureate of the Golden Horse Award,
as the leading actor, and Yuan Quan, the Golden Rooster Award winner, as
the leading actress.
To enable non-Chinese speakers to also have a taste of the exotic
Chinese flavor, the play is equipped with both English and Chinese
captions.
Liao Yimei, who as Meng's wife has cooperated with him in some other
avant-garde works like the drama masterpiece Rhinoceros in Love, and the
movie The Chicken Poets, is the playwright. The couple's joint efforts
have been greatly anticipated by their loyal fans.
The aforementioned sensational and top-notch
performers Yuan Quan and Liu Ye have added more glamour to the play. The
stage artist is Zhang Wu, who has had longtime cooperation with Meng, and
the multimedia designer is Jiang Fengzhou. Yao Chien, a famous lyrics
writer from Taiwan
, has the
role of music director. All of these first-class talents have guaranteed
the play's high quality.
The play has been performed in Hong
Kong and Shanghai,
and will come to Beijing
from March 25 to April 3. After that, it will go on to tour in the
Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore from May 26 to May 29.
Liu and Yuan were classmates at the China Central Academy of Drama.
Liu's debut movie Postman in the Mountain (1998) was chosen as the
audience's favourite at Canada's Montreal International Film Festival. His
acting in Lan Yu won him the Best Actor Award at the 38th Golden Horse
Awards in Taiwan Province and his role in the movie The Foliage won him
the Best Actor Award at the 24th Golden Rooster Awards in the Chinese
mainland.
Liu is one of the best-known film and television actors in China.
Although "Amber" is his first theatrical work since he graduated from the
Academy in 2000, his acting on stage is impressive. He portrays a sexy and
restrained yet volcanic Gao, with a look of perplexity in his eyes.
