The Guangzhou Drama Troupe
The troupe was established in 1962 and renamed the Guangzhou
Drama Troupe in 1975. With more than 60 workers and performers, the troupe
delivers performances both in Mandarin and Cantonese.
The Guangzhou Drama Troupe, which is noted for its bold experimentation and
exploration, has brought forward a series of classic repertoires in recent
years. In 1995, it created a new drama "Soul of Spring and Autumn", which won
the "Excellent Performance Award" and another 11 single awards at the Fourth
Chinese Drama and Opera Festival. The troupe also won the "Wenhua Prize" twice
for its new programmes. In 1997 and 2001, the troupe attended the fifth and
seventh Chinese Drama Festivals with two new plays that also obtained many
awards.
Pan Weixing, Wang Luwei, Du Yuan, Cui Jingfu, Li Weiying, Wang Xiaodi, as
well as nationally recognized Zhang Yechuan and Wang Hong, are the leading
troupe performers. With the help of theater technicians, the troupe has created,
adopted and performed a batch of plays reflecting the social life of modern
times.
In 2001, the troupe began the preparatory work for adopting the famous novel
Bai Menliu into a drama. It began rehearsals in 2003. The play made its official
debut performance in May 2004 in South China's .
It is expected to become the troupe's most noted repertoire.
