The Liaoning People's Art Theater was founded on October 2, 1951 in Shenyang, the capital city of Northeast China’s Liaoning Province. The troupe’s original name was the Northeast People's Art Theater. The theater has established a unique school among all the domestic drama troupes with a distinctively simple, bold, enthusiastic and honest style.

The theater has staged altogether over 180 Chinese and foreign dramas. They include Rebel King Li, Sunrise, Thunderstorm, The Family, Wilderness, The Story of Ah Q, Life of Qiu Jin, Rickshaw Boy, Second Spring, In the Midst of Quietness, Story of Qing Palace, On the Other Side, Dawn over Moscow, Julius Fucik, The Miser, The First Blow, Marriage and King Lear. Its Love on Earth won the 2nd Wenhua Award for new repertoire.

It has also created its own plays, such as Woman Deputy, Spring Breeze in Nuomin River, Blowing the Pipes, Red Stone Bell, The First Emperor of Qin , Mr. Blank Paper, Wreath at the Mountain Foot, Golden River, Love on Earth, Summer in That Year, Sunset, Party Secretary Mingqi and Ages .

Through years of artistic and stage activities, the theater has trained a number of actors and actresses appreciated by the audience, such as for example, Li Moran, Wang Qiuying, Chen Ying, Tiao Fan, He Haiquan, Xin Wei, Liu Wenzhi, Wang Zaolan, Song Guofeng and Zhou Hong.

Also, the troupe has worked on dubbed films and animations since the 1980s. The troupe has earned fame in the circle with its good basic language training of professional drama performers, some of whose works have been very influential across the country. A batch of excellent dubbing performers such as Li Wenhui, Deng Changlan, Chen Daqian, Liu Li, Han Li, Jia Lina, Teng Kuixing, Zhang Mingliang, Zhang Wenyu and Liu Haixia have stood out. The theater established the TV & Film Translation Center and began to cooperate with Shenzhen TV Station in 1998.

Over a span of more than half a century, 408 artists from the theater have obtained various awards above the provincial level. The theater has been conferred the title of “National Cultural Advanced Unit” by the Ministry of Culture.

Song Guofeng, the president of the theater, notes that the new century has endowed new opportunities for the theater, and thatthe troupe will build a more beautiful future both with its maturity and youthful vigor.
