The Comrade-In-Arm Peking Opera Troupe of the Political
Department of Beijing Military Region was founded in 1970 and is the only Peking
opera troupes of the PLA.
The troupe has successfully rehearsed and
performed traditional Peking operas such as Lu Bu and Diao Chan, Luo Cheng,
Story of the Willow Tree etc. and created some historical Peking operas such as
Heroes of the Short Dagger Society, Liang Hongyu, The Buddhist Master Jian Zhen,
Crossing the River, King Li Zicheng Conquer the City of Beijing. The troupes has
also produce modern-style Peking operas such as Wrestlers, Liu Hulan, Chairman
Mao Watches Peking Opera and special evening gala performances such as Gallant
Bearing of the PLA men created in 1997, the troupe's new programme Tears of the
Xiangjiang River has scooped a couple of awards such as the 7th Wenhua Award
issued by the Culture Ministry, the Cao Yu Excellent Award of the 5th
Drama Festival and 7th PLA Culture and Art Award. The troupe's 1998
production, a mythical Peking opera named Deep in the Blue Sea won the Splendid
Theatric Programme Award during the 2nd China Peking Opera Festival.
The famous Peking opera artist Ye Shaolan of
this Troupe has been granted the tide of Fulbright International Scholar by the
US government. Two other actors have won special prizes at 1st World
Convention of Clown Performers. Two other actors won the Plum Blossom Award
while three others Mei Lanfang Gold nomination Awards. Still, four others are
recipients of the government's Special Allowance.
The troupe's famous Peking opera actors
include Ye Shaolan, Li Changchun, Xin Baoda, Wang Yulan, Xu Jiabao, Zhang Ping,
Zhu Baoguang and Yang Yanyi.
