The Opera Troupe of the General political Department of the People's Liberation Army was founded in 1956. Over the past 40 years or more, the troupe has staged over 100 operas, including White-haired Girl, Fianc¨¦e of a Volunteer Army Soldier, The Sun over KeShan Mountain, Liu Hulan, Aulei Yilan, Heart Ties, A Daughter of the Party, Kelimi Joins the Army, Mid-autumn Desert, White Reed Flowers and Red Silk Cotton and Qu Yuan. Among them, A Daughter of the Party was awarded the 2nd Wenhua Award for Best Opera by the Ministry of Culture and National Award of Excellent Repertoire; Kelimu Joins the Army the 5th Wenhua New Repertoire Award and the 4th PLA Art Culture Award; White Reed Flowers and Red Silk Cotton the 1996 National Best Opera Award and the 7th Wenhua New Repertoire Award. The troupe has also staged a Russian opera The Dawn Is Quiet Here, the Italian Opera Tosca and selected scenes from many famous foreign operas. The troupe has toured Russia and the regions of Hong Kong and Macao. It performs mainly for army solders as well as for the masses of people over the country. It has won great honor for the country and the army with their excellent performance. The troupe boasts such famous artists as Yang Hongji, a first grade actor known for his performance in Qu Yuan and A Daughter of the Party; Zhang Jimin, a first grade artist known for his roles in Two Outstanding Generations and Red Silk Cotton Flowers; Wang Jing, a first grade actress famous for her role in Heart of Fragrant Grass and Flower Land; Qin Lufeng, a first grade actor known for his role in Heart Ties and Rondo of the Special Zone; Sun Liying, a first grade actress famous for her show in Mid-autumn Desert and A Daughter of the Party; Cheng Guilan, a first grade actress performing in White Reed Flowers and Red Silk Cotton and A Daughter of the Party; Pan Suzheng, a first grade actress acting in The Dawn Is Quiet Here and Two Outstanding Generations.
