The China Relics Research Institute (CRRI),
founded in 1949, is a research institution under the State Bureau of Cultural
Relics.
Duties and tasks: Focusing on application
research, to protect and conduct research on ancient buildings, grottoes,
temples, and unearthed relics and museum-stored relics of various kinds and
texture by means of modern science and technology as well as traditional
techniques; and to survey, design and oversee projects concerning key national
relics, historical sites, ancient buildings, grottos or temples.
Establishment: CRRI includes the Ancient
Buildings Protection and Design Department, the Grotto and Temple Protection and
Design Department, the Scientific and Technological Department of Relics
Protection, the General Office, and the Relics and Ancient Documents Research
Department.
Major achievements: Since 1978, CRRI has
been awarded scientific and technological prizes at the provincial or ministry
level for the mounting and tearing off technique for the silk paintings at Jinya
Mountain, Linyi, Shandong Province; taking off and restoring techniques for the
frescoes in Li Xian's tomb in the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581 ); protection
and treatment method for unearthed pottery figurines decorated with colored
drawings; research on a new grotto consolidation testing method; anti-seismic
designs for ancient pagoda restoration-the White Pagoda of Jixian County
Restoration Project; restoration techniques for the Qijia Fresco at the Mogao
Grottoes in Dunhuang, GanXu Province; the development and manufacture of
ultraviolet-proof film; a project report on repairing the ancient city wall
of jingzhou by means of fixing anchors; wooden part consolidation
technology for ancient buildings: and the application of short-distance
photography in grotto Surveys.
