Central Opera and Ballet Theatre

The Central Opera and Ballet Theater (COBT) was established in January of 1996 through the merger of the Central Opera Theater and the Central Ballet Troupe. It is an artistic performance institution under the Ministry of Culture.  

Duties and tasks: Create and perform operas and ballet programs of Chinese subjects; introduce and per form Outstanding foreign operas and ballet programs; and train personnel in the fields of opera and ballet, including performers, musicians, stage art personnel, play rights and management personnel. Establishment: COBT includes the opera Troupe, Ballet Troupe, Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, Choreography-Direction Office, Stage art Team, and Performance Management Department.

Major achievements: Since 1978, altogether 22 people with the COBT have won prizes in international competitions. COBT has also provided performances of programs including Carmen, Cinderella, Madame Butterfly, Romeo and Juliet, Lin Daiyu, Don Quixote, Trilogy of Looking for Light; Concubine Yang, Lan Huahua, Mountain Forest, Red Detachment of Women, Swan Lake and Corsairs.
