Chinese Dragon Chip
In 2002, the Computer Institution of the Chinese Academy
of Science (CAS) developed China's first server chip -- "Dragon
Chip 1," which uses a local version of Linux.
Having undergone many strict examinations and tests by
the Computer Institution of the CAS and other authoritative organizations in
China, the Dragon
Chip has proved to be very sound in performance, steady and reliable in
operation, and utterly sufficient in meeting the working requirement of the
server and website. In addition, the birth of "Dragon Chip 1" is considered a
landmark in the continuing development of a national science and technology
industry.
Less than three years later, in April 2005, the CAS issued its "Dragon Chip
2." According to the series of tests, "Dragon Chip 2 " is much better than its
predecessor. Its capabilities are enhanced 10 times, and have achieved Pentium
III
An expert has said that the "Dragon Chip 2" can smoothly support the
Windows system, web browsing, and a DVD player. Besides, it also has a bright
prospect in the areas of network firewall (which permits unauthorized access
from outside while allowing outward communication, router (also called a modem,
which connects a computer and telephone line), multimedia network terminal, and
so on.
As the price of an Intel chip is very high, China hopes the "Dragon Chip 2"
will become a viable option for the 1 billion people living in rural areas.
